My name is Jip Hugo Vrouwenvelder. I was born on October 8, 2003, and I am currently studying CMD at NHL Stenden
I have been living in Sexbierum since 2016, previously in Franeker. I live with my parents and my younger brother. Some of my hobbies include drawing, gaming, reading books and manga, watching films and shows, designing, animating, photography, and cinematography.
My interest in animation began with the film Wall-E by Pixar.
This movie showed me how powerful storytelling can be without many words, simply through visuals and emotions. Wall-E, with its charming and emotional journey, made me experience the magic of animation and how it can evoke deep feelings.
Later, I saw the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This movie was a true revelation for me. The unique animation style, the vibrant colors, and the thrilling action made a huge impression. After watching this film, I knew I wanted to make animation my profession. The combination of art and technology in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse inspired me to tell my own stories and move others with my creations.
Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl music video
For this animation, my good friend Sijb and I set out to create something truly surreal, an experience that would pull the viewer into a dreamlike world where reality bends and flows in unexpected ways. We experimented with a fusion of animation techniques, blending traditional frame-by-frame animation, keyframe animation, 3D animation, and rigged movement into one seamless, hypnotic journey.
Over the course of two intense weeks, we poured more than 10 hours a day into this passion project, completely immersing ourselves in the creative process. We played with physics and lighting in Blender to push the boundaries of what feels real, crafting strange shapes and unpredictable motion to build a world that feels both bizarre and mesmerizing.
This project was more than just an artistic challenge, it was a test of endurance, creativity, and collaboration. Through countless iterations and problem-solving sessions, Sijb and I discovered that we work insanely well together, balancing each other’s strengths and pushing each other to new creative heights. More importantly, we grew even closer as friends, bonded by the shared experience of bringing this surreal vision to life.
Soda can animation
For this animation, I set out to bring a simple soda can to life, making it feel dynamic and engaging. This was my first-ever Blender animation, and it challenged me to learn keyframing, timing adjustments, and easing curves to create smooth motion. I also experimented with Blender’s node system for the first time, using procedural texturing to achieve realistic reflections and condensation.
The biggest challenge was mastering the node editor, but by watching tutorials and iterating on my work, I improved both the animation and the materials. Feedback helped me refine details like bounce effects and lighting, making the final result more polished. This project taught me the fundamentals of animation and procedural workflows, and now I’m excited to push my skills further by creating more complex scenes with interactive elements and advanced simulations.
Breaking Bad edit - RUN
As a personal challenge to elevate my After Effects skills, I created this Breaking Bad edit using a 3D camera. The goal was to experiment with dynamic camera movements, depth, and compositing, while paying tribute to one of my favorite TV series. Every shot was carefully timed and designed to match the intensity of the music and the iconic atmosphere of the show. This project allowed me to push the creative limits of After Effects and refine my workflow for cinematic edits.
Fargo edit - Behind you
This short edit was created as a stylistic experiment to capture the tension and bleak beauty of Fargo Season 1. Centered around Lorne Malvo, the mysterious and unsettling force of the story, the piece explores themes of chaos, morality, and manipulation through a cold, cinematic lens. I focused on emphasizing the show's stark atmosphere, dark humor, and quiet intensity by blending sharp cuts with slow, deliberate pacing. Using Adobe After Effects, I enhanced the visuals with subtle grain, desaturated tones, and moody lighting to mirror Fargo’s distinct, snow-covered world. A minimalist concept that channels menace through mood and silence.
I Saw the TV Glow edit - You need to help me
This short edit was created as a creative exercise to explore VHS-style effects and nostalgic visual storytelling. I chose I Saw the TV Glow as the theme because it's one of my favorite films, its surreal atmosphere, haunting imagery, and emotional depth blend beautifully with the analog aesthetic. My focus was on recreating authentic VHS distortion, static, and chromatic aberration in Adobe After Effects, while keeping the pacing slow and dreamlike. A simple concept, executed with care and style.
The Nightmare Before Christmas edit - My girl
This short edit was created as a heartfelt tribute inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas and my girlfriend, who encouraged me to make it. We both share a love for the film, it’s our favorite Christmas movie, and I chose the song We Fell in Love in October because it reflects the time our story began. The edit blends romance and nostalgia, weaving together the film’s gothic charm with the warmth of personal memory. I focused on creating a dreamy, emotional tone through soft transitions, gentle lighting, and a sense of bittersweet magic. A love letter in motion, where Halloween meets Christmas, and fiction meets feeling.
Little Miss Sunshine edit - Oh look, the poison root
This short edit was created as a stylistic exploration inspired by Little Miss Sunshine. I aimed to capture the film’s raw honesty and offbeat warmth through a grunge-inspired aesthetic layered with paper textures and analog imperfections. The rough edges and tactile feel reflect the film’s themes of imperfection, family, and acceptance. While I’m not entirely proud of the final result, this piece represents an important step in allowing myself to create without the pressure of perfection, embracing experimentation as part of the artistic process.
Manchester by the Sea edit - Fallen to the ground
This short edit was created as an emotional study of grief and isolation, inspired by Manchester by the Sea. I wanted to capture the film’s quiet heartbreak and sense of lingering loss through a nostalgic CRT-style aesthetic. The soft glow, screen flicker, and analog distortion serve as metaphors for memory, fragile, imperfect, and fading over time. My focus was on subtle pacing, melancholic color grading, and atmospheric sound to evoke the film’s tone of stillness and sorrow. A personal exploration of emotion, framed through the static of an old television.
Death Note edit - I win!
This short edit was created as a creative exercise to explore VHS-style effects and nostalgic visual storytelling. I chose Death Note as the theme due to its intense atmosphere and iconic characters, which pair well with the retro analog look. My focus was on learning how to recreate authentic VHS distortion, static, and chromatic aberration, all within Adobe After Effects while keeping the pacing and transitions engaging but minimal. A simple concept, executed with style.
where's my head at_
This short edit was created as a creative exercise and submission for a Call of Duty edit contest. I focused on combining cinematic shots with dynamic pacing to match the intensity and energy of the game. Using Adobe After Effects, I experimented with motion blur, color grading, and impactful transitions to enhance the action and keep the rhythm tight. It was a chance to push my editing skills and storytelling within a high-octane, competitive context. A bold concept, executed with precision.
Coffin Change
This edit was made for a contest and inspired by one of my favorite songs, which helped shape the rhythm, mood, and emotional tone of the piece. I aimed to sync visuals tightly to the music, using pacing, transitions, and subtle effects to let both the song and footage complement each other. Created in Adobe After Effects, the edit was a personal challenge to blend sound and imagery in a way that feels both impactful and cohesive. A passion project, executed with heart.
Campfire animation
My internship at Kweekvijver Noord started with an interview. After having the interview I got a call that they wanted me to work with them.
They also wanted me to do some animation work to showcase where my skills were at. So after this call I got to work and made this animation.
Swimmer animation
After having worked on the Campfire animation I had confidence to make something a little bit more complicated.
I was instructed to use a lot of tutorials and courses to help better my animation skills. This animation was used to improve my character animation skills.
MINDBLOWING
After my first day intergrating myself into the companies workflow I got my first assignment. Eelke (an intern) and me got the assignment to make a product shoot and intergrate animation into the video.
We came up with the idea to shoot a video of Eelke’s guitar and I would animate over it. This is my first time having worked with a green screen so that was very exciting.
Day of the Mother Tongue
After having finished my first project and working a little on my internship report I got my first client assignment. My intern supervisor came to me with the project to make a short animation for the Day of the Mother Tongue.
I made the entire animation myself. First I created a concept and some sketches and after having it approved I got to work.
OR Dokterszorg animation
For this animation I actually got to meet up with the client. My two supervisors and I went to the client to get information about the animation they wanted. I got full control for the animation even down to the voice over.
The client wanted to keep the animation simple and wanted me to use the characters they already had in use. The characters were very badly made so I had to recreate them as best as I could.
The voice over is made by me with my own voice.
OR ODG animation
After a successful animation and happy client I got assigned a similair animation for a different company. This company didn’t have any characters or other assets I should use, this means I made this entire animation down to the illustations.
I also got complete control for thisanimation which was very fun.
Day Against Racism
This is another short animation for Biblionet. In this one I got to challenge myself immensely. I had complete creative control for this one as usual. I decided to challenge myself by making a walking character. This was insanely hard but I am quite proud of the end product.
The message was also a challenge to decide because this is a very broad topic to cover. I created the assets myself.
Big Maths day
This animation was directed at children. The Big Maths Day is a day where children celebrate math with a fun themed day. This year the theme was recycling.
I looked around for information about this day and found a couple of graphics that resembled a robot that children had made. I replicated their art style by making a funny robot animation that was drawn by hand in combination with digital drawing.
World Book Day
Animating this animation was a very fun progress. This is a concept made in collaboration with Job my supervisor. I got full control on the animation per usual. I had a very fun time looking for a way to animate a book that has a pop up picture come out of it.
In the end I am very proud of this animation as it was a challenge to create it and I have learned a lot of new techniques creating it.
Dodenherdenking animation
The 4th of May is a day in the Netherlands where we remember all the fallen victims to the 2nd world war. For this animation I got full control in what I could create. To show my respect I wanted to make something calm and soft.
On this day people hang their flag halfmast and that inspired me to create an animation where you see the flag going half-mast as a sign of respect and rememberance.
Annie M.G. Schmidt Dag
This is an animation in honor of the amazingly talented Annie M.G. Schmidt, whom created our childhood using her widely ranged children books.
The concept for this animation was a challenge since I was not allowed to use the drawings made by Fiep Westendorp. Having my original concept scrapped I had to get creative which gave me a fun challenge. The end result is a subtle but honorable animation for Annie M.G. Schmidt day.
70th Anniversary Biblionet
Using 3D in Adobe Illustrator is something I had never used so this was a new learning experience for me. This animation is for the 70th anniversary of Biblionet.
I made the balloons that fly in in their colors and kept the animation short and sweet because I find that it makes the animation look more playful.
SMI Groep Leader
The client had received an animation they did not find compatible with their company image. I was asked to create an animation that represents their company to the best of my abilities.
I had received a couple of examples they had liked. After doing some research on their company and their image I created a short leader. The client had told my supervisor they really liked how it turned out and that I fully captured what their company represents.
The Key to Space
Creating this was a challening experience. I had made this animation with the help of a tutorial. This made me aware on how to use anticipation and a variation of other animation principles.
The end product makes me insanely happy because I can see how much progress I have made since the beginning of my internship.
Make Magic
I made this animation right after making the Key to Space. After having learned a lot about the various principles I was ready to tackle animating with arcs.
I had a lot of fun making this because for me it represents having fun in animating.
My graphic design journey started with Adobe Photoshop. This is where I found my creative muese. In photshop I make my shirt designs / album covers. All my designs are first sketched on paper and then made in Photshop using various sources of media. Sometimes I make photos and use them, other times I use art I made with my hands and scan them in and then continue working on it in Photoshop. I have worked with photoshop since 2012, after receiving my father’s old laptop with it pre installed.

This image is a personal project I created at the Zeedijk near my hometown, Sexbierum. I wanted to blend reality with fantasy, transforming a familiar landscape into something playful and unexpected. By integrating elements from Mario Kart, I aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgia and excitement, imagining what it would be like if video games merged with the real world.
This piece represents my love for both digital art and gaming, as well as my ability to combine different mediums to tell a visual story. The process of creating this image was both fun and rewarding, allowing me to explore perspective, composition, and digital manipulation. Seeing the final result gave me a sense of accomplishment, as it successfully captures the surreal yet familiar world I envisioned.
This image is a creative project I made in Groningen, on top of the Forum Groningen. I wanted to merge reality with the pixelated world of Super Mario, turning an ordinary crane into a level from the game. The idea was to play with perspective and scale, making it feel like Mario is on the edge of a daring jump into the unknown.
This piece reflects my love for blending digital art with real-world photography. It was fun to create and gave me a chance to experiment with composition and visual storytelling. Seeing the final result made me feel like I had successfully brought a bit of childhood nostalgia into the modern cityscape.
In the current day and age alot of people are struggling with issues that other people may find strange.
I find this idea of not being able to express your feelings and stuff that you are sturgling with strange.
Hence the: IT’S OKAY TO BE SAD. Because you can be sad even if other people might find it unjustifiable.
After using alot of paper textures I had found the style I liked working with.
I made this design to showcase sunshine and happiness, while also having a grim undertone.
I find it fun to make designs that have double meanings and can be interperated differently by the eyes that look at it.
While making this design I was feeling very happy so the design is focused on love. I had just started a relationship with my girlfriend and one of the ways process such a strong feeling is through art.
I showcase a lot of butterflies which obviously represent feeling in love.
This a design that I made while practicing my design skills.
The feeling I want the design to give of is emptiness and the idea of reaching for something when it seems virtually impossible to grab onto something.
Finding my style was quite hard at first but I really like working with paper textures and grunch.
The feeling of nothing is all around us. Sometimes I feel so tiny in such a big world. In the design I want to give off the idea that sometimes we have to embrace nothingness.
Nostalgia is the main focus of the design. I grew up with alot of old media because my dad likes them alot.
I love thinking back to my youth and how much fun I had with the same stuff I still use and watch to this day.
I have grown to like this design more than I used to.
Designing this I was watching one of my favorite tv series: Fire Force.
There is not really a meaning for this design but it can be interpreted as feeling invisible while there still being a lot of eyes on you. Thats one of the reasons I have grown to like the design more.
Memories are like doors, we open them to revisit the past, but some remain locked, fading with time. This design takes the shape of an SD card, a symbol of stored memories, with a door as the cover image, representing the passage between past and present.
I wanted to capture the nostalgic feeling of looking back, where moments feel both vivid and distant. Using textures and subtle grunge elements, I aimed to create a design that feels worn yet timeless, like an old memory resurfacing. This piece reflects how our past shapes us, even when some doors remain closed.
I challenged myself with this design to use a mini-mal amount of colour.
This design represents alot of things, I mainly get the feeling of hypnotising love and someone you hold dear to your heart.
For The Hero Pose project, I wanted to challenge myself by building a fully realized 3D scene inspired by the world of Zelda. My focus was on creating an immersive environment, simple yet effective character models, and rigging them for animation.
To bring the scene to life, I designed and modeled Bill from Gravity Falls, ensuring he fit naturally within the Zelda-inspired world. To streamline the process, I used pre-existing textures, allowing me to focus on character form, style, and integration into the environment. Additionally, I created and rigged another character to walk around, adding movement and liveliness to the scene.
A major challenge was balancing detail and simplicity, ensuring the rigging was functional while keeping the models clean and stylized. Lighting, camera work, and composition played a crucial role in crafting the right atmosphere, and I experimented with different setups to enhance depth and mood.
This project pushed me beyond just modeling, it taught me the importance of scene-building, atmosphere, and animation. I learned how to optimize rigging techniques, use lighting effectively, and compose a scene that feels cohesive and alive. Moving forward, I want to take these skills further by working on more complex environments and refining my character animation techniques.
Creating a character inspired by the viral video Dumb Ways to Die was a fun yet challenging experience. I wanted to capture the playful and colorful essence of the original while adding my own creative twist.
I started by sketching different ideas, experimenting with exaggerated features like big eyes and expressive facial expressions to emphasize the humor. Choosing vibrant colors helped bring the character to life, making it feel just as quirky and chaotic as the original video.
One of the biggest challenges was finding a balance between inspiration and originality. Since Dumb Ways to Die already has such a recognizable style, I had to ensure my design stood out while still feeling connected to the source material. This meant refining details, tweaking proportions, and experimenting with different elements to create something unique yet familiar.
This project taught me a lot about adapting an existing style while maintaining creative freedom, and it pushed me to develop a stronger sense of design identity.
This was my first-ever Illustrator design, created during my internship when I had some spare time. I wanted to challenge myself and test my design skills by making a fun, personal project. Since I love penguins and enjoy creating cute characters, I decided to design a penguin holding a bat, something playful yet simple.
Working on this piece helped me explore Illustrator’s tools, from shape-building to refining details with the pen tool. It was a great learning experience in character design, and seeing the final result made me proud of my progress. This was my first fully completed Illustrator character, and it motivated me to keep improving and experimenting with new ideas.
A fun and exciting challenge, creating a character based on myself. Two interns and I were working on an animation project based around the process of making an animation.
For this particular animation we chose the character to be based on me. So I thought it would be fun to create myself. It was challenging to design but I used a lot of references and the style board we created came in use to choose the type of clothing my character would wear.
